Floor Care Guide

At Floors-2u, we want your new flooring to look its best for years to come. With the right care and maintenance, your floors will stay safe, attractive, and durable. Please follow these guidelines depending on the type of flooring you’ve chosen.

General Flooring Care (All Types)

  • Entrance mats: Always use high-quality doormats at entrances to reduce dirt, grit, and moisture.
  • Cleaning: Regularly vacuum or sweep to prevent dirt from scratching or dulling surfaces.
  • Spills: Clean spills immediately with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Never allow liquids to sit for long periods.
  • Furniture protection: Use felt pads or protective caps under heavy furniture to prevent dents and scratches.
  • Temperature & humidity: Keep rooms well-ventilated and maintain stable indoor conditions to avoid warping or shrinkage (especially for wood and laminate).

Carpet

  • Vacuuming: Vacuum at least twice a week in high-traffic areas; once a week elsewhere. Use a vacuum with an adjustable beater bar or suction-only setting for delicate piles.
  • Spot cleaning: Blot stains immediately using a clean, damp cloth. Avoid scrubbing. Use a mild carpet cleaner if necessary, testing in an inconspicuous area first.
  • Professional cleaning: Consider professional deep cleaning every 12–18 months.
  • Avoid: Over-wetting, harsh chemicals, and bleach.

Carpet Care: Please refer to the individual manufacturer’s recommendations for carpet care and maintenance, as each material and carpet cut may require a different cleaning method.

Laminate

  • Cleaning: Use a vacuum with a hard floor attachment or a soft broom.
  • Mopping: Use a well-wrung damp mop only. Never flood laminate floors with water.
  • Cleaners: Use laminate-specific cleaners. Avoid abrasive powders, wax, or steam cleaners.
  • Protection: Lift, don’t drag, heavy furniture.

Vinyl

  • Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and grit.
  • Mopping: Clean with a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Stains: Wipe spills quickly to prevent staining.
  • Avoid: Abrasive scrubbers, harsh chemicals, or solvent-based cleaners.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

  • Daily care: Sweep or vacuum to remove dirt and grit.
  • Mopping: Use a damp mop with a mild detergent. Do not soak.
  • Protection: Use non-rubber backed mats (rubber can stain LVT).
  • Heat: Avoid placing hot objects directly on the surface.

Engineered / Real Wood

  • Sweeping: Dust or sweep daily to prevent scratches from grit.
  • Mopping: Use a barely damp microfiber mop. Never saturate wood with water.
  • Products: Use wood floor cleaners only. Avoid soap-based, abrasive, or steam cleaners.
  • Spills: Wipe up immediately to prevent staining or warping.
  • Environment: Maintain indoor humidity between 40–60% to prevent boards from expanding or shrinking.

Caring for Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Protect against furniture damage – Moving chairs and tables without protection can leave scratches. Fit felt pads to the underside of furniture legs to keep your floor smooth and unmarked.
  • Clean spills promptly – While engineered wood is treated, it’s still important not to let water or stains sit on the surface. Wipe up spills as soon as they happen to avoid long-term damage.
  • Safeguard high-traffic areas – Place rugs or mats in busy spaces, such as hallways or living rooms, to reduce scuffs, scratches and general wear.

Extra Tips

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s specific care instructions (we can provide these on request).
  • Using protective mats in high-traffic zones (entrances, hallways) will extend the life of your floor.
  • If unsure about a product or cleaning method, contact Floors-2u before use.
